Anglicare Sydney in partnership with Yagoona Anglican Church has opened a new Mobile Community Pantry in the area. Every second Wednesday, a van drives up to the church at 213 Auburn Road to distribute affordable food to those who need to stretch their budget further.
For a $10 contribution, people on a Health Care, Immigration or Pension card can take home more than $60 worth of pantry items. People are limited to two large grocery bags of food.
According to Jenny Jones, organiser of the MCP at Yagoona Anglican, “The church partnered with Anglicare because we saw that a need in community could be met.”
With the high cost of rent and electricity bills, many people are finding it difficult to put food on the table. It’s been stated that the median rent in Yagoona is about $300 per week. The median individual income in Yagoona is $386 per week.
“By saving on the cost of food, it will help people pay other essential items like rent, electricity and water bills,” says Matt Madigan, Anglicare MCP manager.
“It may also come in handy when unexpected events, such as a sudden hospital visit or car breakdown, can impact the weekly budget.”
For Jenny, the pantry is more than just a means to distribute food to people who may desperately need it.
“We hope to build relationships with the people who come along to the pantry and hopefully they can come to trust us to help them, not only with their food needs, but with any other needs as well,” says Jenny.
“It is important to care for the local community because God cares for us very much and God's people should be who you can turn to for help in times of need.”
