Join “Beating the Blues” Walk at Prince Alfred Park to Support Better Mental Health

Anglicare Sydney is urging the community join their annual “Beating the Blues” walk to stomp out the stigma associated with mental illness.

On Friday, 7 October, Anglicare’s Personal Helpers and Mentors Randwick and Maroubra (PHaMs) programs will be hosting a walk around Prince Alfred Park at 11am, with other activities and a lunch organised from 12pm onwards.

“The aim of the day is to break down the stigma associated with mental illness. So many struggle alone because they fear being judged. With greater understanding, we can all play a positive role in the recovery journey of someone with mental health challenges,” says Narelle Hand, PHaMs Coordinator.

Nearly half (45%) of the population will experience a mental health challenge at some stage in their lives. Almost one in five Australians (20%) will experience a mental illness in a 12-month period. At least one third of young people have had an episode of mental illness by the time they are 25 years old.

“With almost one in five Australians experiencing a mental illness in a year, many of us know someone who has experienced or is experiencing mental health challenges. No one is immune to mental health problems. Anyone can experience depression, anxiety or other mental health challenges at some point in their lives,” explains Narelle.

“It’s important to note that most people with mental illness recover well and are able to lead full and satisfying lives. All they need is the appropriate support.”

After the walk there will be opportunities to participate in Cardio Tennis, yoga, meditation, basketball games and much more.

Special guest speakers and a speaker’s tent with recovery stories have also been arranged. A BBQ lunch will also be provided free to all who attend the event. The event is also supported by the City of Sydney.
